A hot cross bun is a spiced sweet bun usually made with fruit, marked with a cross on the top, and has been traditionally eaten on Good Friday throughout the world.
In the 12th Century a monk decorated his freshly baked buns with a cross on Good Friday, also known as the Day of the Cross. The custom gained popularity, and over the years fruits and spices were added to represent health and prosperity.
